Career Pathways: Building Confidence through Project Management with Fatoumatta Camara

For newcomer women, the journey to find their footing in a new country is often filled with uncertainty and challenges. Fatoumatta Camara, who moved from The Gambia to Canada, is one such woman who navigated this path with resilience. Her story reflects not only her determination but also the transformative power of the Sister2Sister Advanced Leadership Program (ALP) — a six-month skills and leadership development program offered by Newcomer Women’s Services Toronto (NEW), in partnership with various colleges and business schools, including Schulich ExecEd.

From Peacebuilding to Project Management

In The Gambia, Fatoumatta was already a changemaker, working with a peacebuilding organization to foster dialogue and advance women’s roles in conflict resolution. But when she moved to Canada, she knew that translating her skills to the Canadian workforce would require further development. It was during this transition that she found the Sister2Sister ALP — a program designed to bridge the gap between employer needs and newcomer women’s skills.

Mastering Risk Mitigation through Project Management

One of the most impactful parts of the program for Fatoumatta was the Foundations of Project Management course, led by Schulich ExecEd. In particular, the focus on risk mitigation was transformative for her. “In my role as a Special Projects Coordinator, I’m often juggling multiple projects at once,” she shared. “The risk mitigation component was especially useful. It taught me how to assess potential risks, understand how likely they were to happen, and create a plan to either prevent or minimize those risks.”

The risk assessment tools provided in the course equipped her to navigate complex project environments with greater confidence. These practical skills didn’t just stay in the classroom. Fatoumatta used what she learned to excel in her role, where managing various projects often comes with unforeseen challenges. “Having a clear understanding of risk management helped me feel more confident in leading these projects, knowing I had the tools to handle whatever might come my way,” she reflected.

Additionally, Fatoumatta emphasized how the course enhanced her transferable skills, allowing her to apply project management techniques in different sectors, including the nonprofit sector. She noted that these skills have given her the versatility to handle diverse projects with confidence and efficiency.

Unwavering Guidance and Lasting Bonds

What made her experience even more enriching was the support she received from her Schulich ExecEd instructor, Sandra Martyn. The instructor’s patience and friendliness with continued guidance made a huge difference in her learning journey.

Fatoumatta also appreciated how the course structure allowed her to access materials anytime, giving her the flexibility to go back and refine her knowledge. This continuous access to resources and support was invaluable in solidifying the skills she learned. Additionally, Schulich ExecEd’s live sessions, held on Saturday mornings, are designed to accommodate busy women who often juggle multiple jobs and responsibilities, making it easier for them to pursue their professional development.

The Sister2Sister ALP doesn’t just offer technical training; it creates a community of women who support one another, and Fatoumatta felt that sense of belonging deeply. “The program gave me confidence — not just through the skills I gained but through the connections I made with other women on similar journeys. We learned together, and we’re growing together.”

More Than Just a Program — A Bridge to New Opportunities

Fatoumatta’s story is a powerful example of how the Sister2Sister ALP is more than just a training program. It’s a bridge to new opportunities, providing newcomer women with the skills, confidence, and network they need to succeed in Canada. Programs like these not only equip women with the tools to navigate their careers but also offer the support they need to rebuild their lives with confidence.

Her journey from The Gambia to Canada, from peacebuilding to project management, is a testament to the resilience of newcomer women and the power of education and mentorship in helping them succeed.
