Bringing University Education to Bruce Country: Local Project Managers Complete Successful NII Pilot

Bruce Power-funded partnership delivers York University’s Schulich ExecEd course in Saugeen Shores.

Nineteen professionals got the best of all worlds between remote, hybrid, and in-person university education at the first Advanced Project Management pilot hosted by the Nuclear Innovation Institute (NII) and taught by York University’s Schulich Executive Education, Schulich School of Business—right here in Saugeen Shores, Ontario.

Over the past several months, Bruce Power filled a room at NII’s headquarters with professionals from the Major Component Replacement (MCR) team looking to advance in their project management careers. These virtual-led lessons for students attending in-person at NII successfully created the camaraderie and team motivation of a classroom while also allowing students to flexibly pivot to fully remote sessions during winter storms.

Now prepared to write the formal PMP Exam issued by the Project Management Institute (PMI), these professionals have honed their skills in the latest project management methodologies, ensuring they are equipped to drive success in the energy sector and beyond.

“Congratulations to the MCR Team for successfully completing the first Bruce Power Advanced Project Management course in partnership with the Schulich School of Business and NII,” said Byron House, Senior Director, Major Projects at Bruce Power. “This achievement demonstrates the team’s commitment to lifelong learning, enhancing their skills in project management.”

“We are delighted to announce our partnership with Bruce Power and the Nuclear Innovation Institute, which marks a significant milestone in our commitment to advancing project management excellence in the energy sector,” said Rami Mayer, Executive Director of Schulich ExecEd, Schulich School of Business, York University. “Our partnership with NII and Bruce Power has provided a unique blend of in-person and remote learning experiences, offering the best of both worlds for our participants. Now equipped to undertake the formal PMP designation, we are confident in the leaders’ enhanced abilities to excel and make a significant impact to the organization.”

He added: “Through initiatives like the Advanced Project Management program, we are not only equipping professionals with the necessary tools for success that they can bring back to their roles immediately, but also fostering a culture of continuous learning and career growth. This partnership exemplifies the impact that strategic collaborations can have in shaping the future of project management leadership in the energy sector and beyond.”

“This is the beginning of a fantastic partnership with York University’s Schulich ExecEd,” said NII Vice President Stellina Williams. “NII is dedicated to finding innovative approaches to bringing in-demand courses to students in the region—and this is a prime example of convening the right partners in an ideal location for area professionals.”
